Iowa Wild issued the following announcement on Oct. 30.
Iowa Wild, in conjunction with Wells Fargo, the City of Ames and the City of Indianola, announced a community ice rink will be built for public use in both Ames and Indianola starting in the winter of 2018.
“We are committed to growing the game of hockey in Iowa and thanks to some great community partners, we have the opportunity to expand our rink program to Ames and Indianola this winter,” said Iowa Wild President Todd Frederickson. “We now have five community rinks for citizens all around the Des Moines Metro to pursue outdoor winter activity. During the past few years, these rinks have become staples in their respective communities. We’re excited to bring two new rinks to the region and look forward to seeing children and adults alike skating outside.”
Iowa Wild and Wells Fargo announced the first community rink in December of 2016, which was located in West Des Moines at Raccoon River Park. The following year, the two organizations announced rinks located in Ankeny and Waukee.
With the addition of Ames and Indianola, the Wild and Wells Fargo have built five community rinks for the region. Ames’ rink will be built at South River Valley Park and Indianola’s rink will be built at Pickard Sports Complex, located at 2205 E 2nd Ave, Indianola, IA 50125. All rinks will be available for use in the winter months free to the public.
“Wells Fargo is thrilled to once again to be partnering with Iowa Wild to provide two more communities with skating rinks – the fourth and fifth rinks we have sponsored in central Iowa since 2016,” Wells Fargo Region Bank President Marta Codina said. “These rinks will be great additions to the communities of Ames and Indianola. Wells Fargo and our nearly 16,000 Iowa team members love to support initiatives and causes that benefit our communities.”
The rinks have been donated in a partnership between the Iowa Wild and Wells Fargo. Each rink measures at 80 feet by 40 feet (a regular hockey rink measures 200 by 85). The rinks will be open as long as weather permits and the ice remains frozen.
"This is tremendous news for Ames outdoor skating enthusiasts and we are excited by this public-private partnership," said Ames Mayor John Haila. "Iowa Wild and Wells Fargo have generously provided the materials for an outdoor ice rink, which will allow Ames Parks and Recreation to accommodate hockey players and ice skaters at South River Valley Park this winter. This donation encourages skaters of all ages to stay active even when it's cold out."
“On behalf of the City of Indianola and its residents, I would like to thank Iowa Wild and Wells Fargo for this generous gift to our community,” Indianola City Manager Ryan Waller said. “We are thrilled to be able to offer this new winter recreational opportunity for citizens and visitors of all ages.”
